The diamond nomenclature categorizes the complete absence of color in the stone as the most valuable.
A precious stone characterized by an increasing yellow or brown tone is gradually categorized as less valuable. This valuation scheme does not only consider the optical effect of the specific stone, but addresses the rareness of colorless stones too. Distinctively intensive and nicely colored clear diamonds are very popular as "fancy color" diamonds. It is rather difficult to define the boundaries of the application of this decorative term accurately. Clear yellow and brown precious stones do not belong to this category, but they are definitely considered attractive. These colored diamonds emerged from the shadows only a few years ago, and with sales promoting names, such as "Cognac" or "Champagne," they are becoming ever more fashionable.
